recompose

The artists infused the project with their unique vision of today’s world

recompose was born out of the desire to bring a new generation of Aboriginal artists from many nations and disciplines across Canada together in a creative collaboration.

Combining theatre with performance, 16mm film with visual art, cello and electronic beats with the sounds of Anishabemowin, the artists infused the project with their unique vision of today’s world. In true Trickster’ spirit and through the lense of Indigenous prophecy, the artists decomposed old predictions of the Future to recompose new interpretations of the Past. Together, they fulfilled another prophecy: “it will be the Artists who will awaken the people” (Louis Riel).

In a not too distant future, a giant turtle starship lands on Earth. Nanabush, our Anishnaabe Trickster and creator of Turtle Island manifests in order to remind us that the coming times are critical to the survival of the human species. Indigenous peoples have been prophesying about this for a long long time. What future awaits us? If any at all?

Poetic and political, humouristic and technological, this collaborative performance offers a unique vision of today’s worldly issues.

REPRÉSENTATIONS

Recompose was presented at Sala Rossa during Festival Phenomena (October 2013).

"A beautiful surprise of the Festival’s programming was certainly Emilie Monnet’s show recompose, which brought together young Aboriginal performers from various communities, a strong and original proposal, visually beautiful, and a far cry from any traditional clichés on Aboriginal Peoples."
D.Kimm, Artistic Director, Festival Phenomena
