October 13 to 23, 2015 – Mooniyaang, Anishinabemowin name for Montreal, is one of Onishka’s upcoming projects about the History of this territory.
Indigenous perspectives on the History of Montreal are still difficult to access. As artists, how do we make use of our artistic sensibilities so as to question and transform the dominant historical discourses? How do Indigenous languages, through their sounds and the meaning of their words, offer us a better understanding of the land from which they originate, and as such, deepen our connection with the territory?
This project is a collaboration between artists Scott Benesiinaabandan, Émilie Monnet and Pohanna Pyne Feinberg. A first week of research took place in September where artists researched monuments around the city, and drove around the island following the river. A second research and creation residency took place in October, hosted by Hexagram at Concordia University.
