— July 7 to 11, 2023 at the Avignon Festival —
Marguerite : le feu will be part of the program of the 77th Avignon festival. The piece will be presented on July 7-8-9-10 and 11, 2023 at the Théâtre Benoît XII. It is a great honor for Émilie Monnet and Onishka Productions to accept the invitation of the director of the Festival d’Avignon, the playwright Tiago Rodrigues.
The presentation of the piece in France will be a privileged opportunity to have the Indigenous and Black voices of the piece resonate back at the “source” of the colonial project of New France, and to open up fruitful dialogues.

A NEW MARGUERITE
Marguerite: le feu will undergo several adaptations for these performances. A new cast of four performers, instead of three: Émilie Monnet, Anna Beaupré Moulounda, Catherine Dagenais Savard and Tatiana Zinga Botao. Changes to the set design and costumes are underway. Mélanie Demers also joins the project as movement director. The text will be rewritten to adapt it to the European context, in order to make certain references clearer to an audience less familiar with Indigenous and Canadian realities, and to emphasize the Martinican voices collected during the investigations, notably that of Martinican ethnomusicologist Dominique Cyrille.
The piece will also benefit from English surtitles to reach a broader audience. This new version of the piece, adapted to a larger number of stages and surtitled as needed, will support the touring of the work [booking : Cusson Management].
